Festival Week Events 10 – 16 June 2018


Throughout the week the whole town and surrounding area is celebrating local food and drink. Food and drink producers are opening their doors to the public to showcase what they do; restaurants, cafes and pubs are putting on special menus as well as food related quizzes and master classes; food and drink retailers are hosting special festival food and wine tastings throughout the week and, of course, the popular Food Trail.

The programme for 2018:

Monday to Friday

Tours of the town’s historic Palmers Brewery (FREE event)

11 am prompt

You’ll go behind the scenes in the historic brewery building to watch every stage of the centuries- old brewing process.  The tour ends with a beer tasting (or soft drink) in Palmers Wine Store. Bookings MUST be made in advance via the Bridport Tourist Information Centre

 

Sunday 10 June

Open Farm Sunday at Washingpool Farm DT6 5HP  (FREE event)

10 am – 4pm  

This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do producing our food, enhancing the countryside and all the goods and services farmers provide.  Walk around the farm, see the farm animals, tractor and trailer rides, view crops and polytunnels, see a small, mixed farm at work, meet the Discover Farming team from the Melplash Agricultural Society in the farm classroom. Lots of fun to be had too!

Tuesday 12 June

Tour of Leakers Bakery 29 East Street DT6 3JX by Owner & Baker, Caroline Parkins

10 am (limited to 8 people)

Caroline will be giving a tour around the award winning bakery – a premises that has been the home of a baker since the 1830s.   The wide range of breads for sale in the shop are still hand-made on the premises in the time-honoured way, taking time, using the simplest ingredients of flour, water, levain for sourdoughs and yeast for everyday loaves.

Indian Cookery Masterclass with Helen Choudhury, Taj Mahal Restaurant East Street Bridport

2pm – 4pm  Cost £25 per person (limited to 7 people)

A unique opportunity to learn the art of making authentic Indian dishes from well-known chef and co-owner of the Taj Mahal Bridport, Helen Choudhury.   Helen will demonstrate and give you hands-on experience of how to prepare a 3-course authentic Indian meal.  As well as learning how to cook the meal you will sit down at the end with the rest of the group to enjoy the dishes prepared.

Wednesday 13 June

Learn how to make sausages with Philip Frampton of Frampton’s Butchers,  East Street Bridport DT6 3LF

10 am (limited to 8 people)

A chance to learn this most traditional butchery skill from Phil Frampton.  Using local English Pork, Phil will show attendees how to prepare the pork, make the sausage mix and then how to stuff and link.

Furleigh Estate Vineyard and Winery Tour with vegan wine & Canapes, Salway Ash DT6 5JF at 2.30pm

Join the team at Furleigh for this special vegan friendly tour of the vineyard to celebrate Bridport Food Festival.  On arrival you will be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine before their experienced tour guide Nick Beecheno leads you down to the vineyard to tell you what’s happening with the vines at this vibrant time of year.   After the tour of the winery, where you will see how their award-winning fizz is made, you will return to the Cellar Door tasting room for the wine tasting.   To complement the wines, Hungry Mule catering company has created a collection of delicious plant- based canapés. Victoria Bishop, their resident food and wine matching expert will guide you through the different flavour combinations to see which ones work best, inspiring you with some fresh, healthy and exciting food and wine pairing ideas.

Indian 3 course dinner and wine pairing at the Taj Mahal, East Street, Bridport with wine from Morrish & Banham

Indulge in a 3-course Indian meal masterminded by Helen Choudhury and her team, and presented by her daughter, Sarah Ali-Choudhury.  Experience a diverse range of authentic dishes and flavours during the meal.  Each course will be accompanied by two different wines carefully selected by Mark Banham who will explain the reasoning behind successful pairing of wine with deliciously spiced Indian dishes.

Liberty Orchards Tour and Tasting – Halstock, Dorset BA22

6.30 to 8.30 pm  Cost £8 including refreshments (tea/coffee & flapjacks)

The Dorset Foodie, Christine McFadden: talk about her new book ‘Flour: a comprehensive guide’. Christine is a well-established food writer, professional recipe developer and cookery teacher. She is well-known for her inspiring cookbooks and her regular magazine features.

Wallace and Gromit have opened a new bakery and business is booming, not least because a deadly Cereal Killer has murdered all the other bakers in town. Gromit is worried that they may be next but Wallace does not care as he has fallen in love.

The Green Weigh, Zero Waste Shop on Wheels –  Bridport Town Hall  FREE Event

A Celebration of the Garden Year and the School’s Pea Please Project

A celebration of the garden year and the School’s Peas Please project – a pledge for veg.  The whole theme is about tasting so there will be lots of activities that will involve trying out and guessing what kind of flavour it is.  The children have also built a Legume Castle as part of the Peas Please Project.    There will be many stalls including plant stalls, tea/coffee, cake, cob oven pizzas, fresh stir-fry from the wok.  Children’s activity area with Martin Maudsley and a ‘taste’ stall where you can do a fun taste test. Especially interesting is the umami flavour!

Bridport RoundTable Beer Festival at Asker Meadow

Friday 6.30pm – 11pm  Saturday 11am – 11pm 

With up to 75 beers and 30 ciders, the Round Table’s Beer Festival is the party in the park that you don’t want to miss!  From the light and fruity to the dark and sinister, our carefully selected variety of ales will delight the grizzled old ale-quaffer to the uncertain lager drinker. 

A full range of traditional and fruity ciders, and the introduction of Wino’s-Corner should satisfy those looking for an alternative thirst quencher.

Palmers Brewery  For the non-beer drinker, Palmers will be running a bar alongside the Bridport Round Table’s Beer Festival, serving wine, Pimm’s and Dorset Orchard ciders, profits going to Minerva Learning Trust.

We have joined forces with West Country Catch and Furleigh Estate to bring Fish & Fizz to the Festival.  On arrival you will receive a glass of Furleigh Estate Sparkling Rose NV or Classic Cuvee 2014 to enjoy with your seafood platter which will include: Dressed Crab, Cockles, Mussels, Brown Shrimps, Peeled Prawns, Crevettes and Whelks* – along with a selection of fresh bread from Leakers Bakery.

To make your evening even more special cooked Portland lobsters* and live Oysters are available to pre-order at an additional cost.

Furleigh Estate wine will also be available to purchase on the night by the glass or bottle
