Festival Week Events 11 – 17 June 2017


Throughout the week the whole town and surrounding area is celebrating local food and drink. Food and drink producers are opening their doors to the public to showcase what they do; restaurants, cafes and pubs are putting on special menus as well as food related quizzes and master classes; food and drink retailers are hosting special festival food and wine tastings, we also have a foraging session and throughout the week free foodies activities on Bucky Doo Square and of course the popular Food Trail. “Spirit of Dorset” Cocktails at Bridge House, 3 Prout Bridge, Beaminster DT8 3AY

Throughout the week from 6pm – 11pm the Bridge House, Beaminster will be serving ‘Spirit of Dorset’ cocktails made from 100% Dorset ingredients and designed by Lloyd Brown of the Grey Bear Bar Company:

Bloody Perfect Mary –  Porters Perfection vodka, Dorset Nagas, Dorsetshire sauce and tomato juice. Served with a savoury bite. 

Rhubarb and Custard –  Porters Perfection vodka, rhubarb, custard and Dorset knobs . Served with a sweet bite

Each cocktail will be served with a delicious tapas sized bite, for just £7.50.  Enjoy in their beautiful bar or al fresco in their walled garden

Monday to Friday

Tours of the town’s historic Palmers Brewery (FREE event)

11 am prompt

You’ll go behind the scenes in the historic brewery building to watch every stage of the centuries- old brewing process.  The tour ends with a beer tasting (or soft drink) in Palmers Wine Store. Bookings MUST be made in advance via the Bridport Tourist Information Centre

FREE Foodie fun activities using local ingredients on Bucky Doo Square with the Friendly Food Club  See timetable below (maybe subject to change)

12 noon – 4 pm

Mon:       Guess what’s in 2 soups from vegetables displayed. PRIZE: Blender

Tues:       Make your own omelettes. Photographed and shown at the Food Festival.  PRIZE Non-stick Omelette pan

Weds:     Sugar competition. How many spoons of sugar in each shopping basket product?  PRIZE Sugar Free Local Products

Thurs:     UNITY International Buffet – Falafel making with tasters and recipe cards

Fri:          Silly Salads – make the silliest, most interesting salad. Will be photographed and shown at the Festival. PRIZE Box of local salad ingredients

Photographs and Prizes will be given out at the Food Festival at Asker Meadows on Saturday 17 June

Sunday 11 June

Open Farm Sunday at Washingpool Farm DT6 5HP  (FREE event)

10 am – 4pm  

It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do producing our food, enhancing the countryside and all the goods and services farmers provide.  Walk around the farm, see the farm animals, tractor and trailer rides, view crops and polytunnels, see a small, mixed farm at work.  Discover Farming team from the Melplash Agricultural Society in the farm classroom. Lots of fun to be had too!

Monday 12 June

Take a walk on the wild side with Dominic Brown from BearKat and Fraser Christian from Coastal Survival.

9 am – Foraging walk, talk and eat with Fraser Christian and then back to Bearkat Barrack St, Bridport DT6 3LX for some food and more chatting

They will take you on a foraging walk and talk, show you things that can be picked and eaten on your daily dog walk then head back to BearKat for some food and more tips and talking from Fraser.

7 pm –  For the evening event join Dominic and Fraser Christian for cocktails and food over a chat about foraging

Tuesday 13 June

Tour of Leakers Bakery, 29 East Street,  by Baker Caroline Parkins

10 am (limited to 8 people)

Caroline will be giving a tour around the award winning bakery – a premises that has been the home of a baker since the 1830s.   The wide range of breads for sale in the shop are still hand-made on the premises in the time-honoured way, taking time, using the simplest ingredients of flour, water, levain for sourdoughs and yeast for everyday loaves.

Cost £5 including refreshments and an award winning scone (all proceeds will go to the Food Festival)  Bookings can be made in the Shop or by email shop@leakersbakery.co.uk

Indian Cookery Masterclass with Helen Choudhury, Taj Mahal Restaurant, East Street, Bridport

2pm – 4pm  Cost £25 per person (limited to 7 people)

A unique opportunity to learn the art of making authentic Indian dishes from well-known chef and co-owner of the Taj Mahal Bridport, Helen Choudhury.   Helen will demonstrate and give you hands-on experience of how to prepare a 3-course authentic Indian meal.  As well as learning how to cook the meal you will sit down at the end with the rest of the group to enjoy the dishes prepared.

Furleigh Estate Vineyard and Winery Tour with Tastings, Salway Ash DT6 5JF at  2.30pm

Visitors will be given a full tour of the vineyard and winery, followed by a  wine tasting & food pairing with locally produced charcuterie from Capreolus Fine Foods from Rampisham.  David Richards will also give a mini talk about the art of meat curing and smoking.

Food Quiz and Tasting with John & Geraldine Baker RopeMakers, West Street (Free event)

6.30 pm Food Tastings, 8pm Food Quiz  

This is a very popular event during the Food Festival Week so early arrival is recommended.

A tasting of six artisan West Dorset cheeses and cocktails featuring Liberty Fields vodka from Lloyd Brown.

Spicy Huhan Night, Beach & Barnicott, South Street

7.30 pm 

A three course meal traditional chinese meal cooked by  Julie (Wen Li) who is a Canton native and connoisseur of China’s many cuisines, which she has learnt from travelling the country.

The menu:

Hui Guo Rou : Chili, leeks and pork. A ‘return to the pan’ Hunanese staple

Da Pan Ji : A Xinjiangese standard done here in a Hunanese style, chicken slow cooked with potato and mild spices

Hongshao Paigu : Pork ribs slow cooked in Hunanese spiced gravy

Thursday 15 June

Alzheimer’s Society Cupcake Day at Haddon House, West Bay DT6 4EL

2.30pm to 4.30pm

To be hosted by Victoria Chilcott to raise money to fight dementia. There will be a tombola, guess the weight of the cake (donated by office staff at Care South), and ice creams from Steve Duke 10% of takings will be given to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Liberty Orchards Tour and Tasting (Halstock, Dorset BA22 9SZ)

6.30pm to 8.30pm

The visit will involve a guided walk around our organic orchards with a talk on all aspects of orchard establishment and management, viewing of the production facilities, including the barn ‘solera’ where our apple balsamic vinegar is aged, and an opportunity to taste Liberty Fields orchard products – Apple balsamic vinegar, Apple Aperitif and Porter’s Perfection Golden Vodka.

Friday 16 June

“In our Back Yard” St. Mary’s School Edible Garden, Skilling Hill  3.30pm – 5.30 pm

The school  will be showcasing all its best outdoor things, especially the growing of food and healthy school meals. The public is invited to look around the raised beds and poly tunnels, as well as tasting foods and drinks made by the school community.

Friday June 16 and Saturday June 17

Allington Hillbillies, Allington Hill Picnic & Sports Day

10am – 4pm  

Bring a picnic and celebrate National Picnic week.  Sit in the flower meadow and watch working horses or join in with the traditional sports of sack race and egg and spoon before finishing off the day with Aiden’s Amble (organised by Aiden Cooper Aged 15) a route around the hill, taking in the breathtaking views. Minimum £2 donation to take part, raising money to provide free woodland activity events for local families

 

Bridport RoundTable Beer Festival in Asker Meadow

Over 80 different beers and cider will be on offer, along with live music
